Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is a local charity that promotes the wellbeing of older people, by providing a wide range of services and support that reduce social isolation and help older people remain engaged in their local communities.

Men in Sheds

Men in Sheds offers older men the opportunity to take part in a wide range of practical activities in the company of their peers.

The shed is:

  • A space where members can share the tools and resources that they need in order to work on projects of their own choosing
  • A space for informal learning and skills sharing
  • A place of leisure where men come together to work.

This project is being delivered in Belgrave, Thurncourt, Evington, Spinney Hills and Wycliffe.

Anything Goes

The “Anything Goes” model is about working with older people to develop locally based activities that enable small groups of isolated older people to come together. As the name of the project suggests, the activities depend on what older people choose to do.

This project is being delivered in Belgrave, Thurncourt, Evington, Spinney Hills and Wycliffe.

Loneliness Prescription

The Loneliness Prescription service supports GP practices to deal with the social issues presented by some older patients who feel lonely and isolated. Trained volunteers work with older people to promote their wellbeing and reduce reliance upon clinical services.

This project is being delivered in Belgrave, Thurncourt, Evington, Spinney Hills and Wycliffe.

Befriending and Mentoring

The Befriending and Mentoring service targets the most socially isolated older people in Leicester. The service offers a variety of support, including regular face-to-face visits or telephone calls provided by volunteers.

The mentoring element of the service provides support focused on achieving an objective which may be time-limited. For example, a volunteer mentor may work with an older person to support them in accessing a local social activity. As the older person gains confidence, this support may no longer be needed.

This project is being delivered in Belgrave, Thurncourt, Evington, Spinney Hills and Wycliffe.
