FOCUS is a charity that aims to inspire and empower young people to become more actively involved in their local community - raising their aspirations, developing skills and self-confidence and improving their life opportunities. The organisation was founded in 1988, and has worked with over 18,000 young people with the support of 5,000 volunteers.

Roots and Shoots

Roots and Shoots is an intergenerational gardening project that aims to bring young people together with older people. They work as a team to undertake gardening projects, either in older people's gardens or in nearby parks, allotments and public spaces.

The project includes:

  • Improving gardens so that older people have easier access
  • Tackling unused and overgrown communal green spaces
  • Growing food and other edible plants/herbs to use and share in the community
  • Young and older people becoming physically active, whilst learning gardening knowledge from the community.

This project is being delivered in Belgrave, Thurncourt, Evington, Spinney Hills and Wycliffe.
