CIO host Vaisakhi celebration event

  • Published on 11th May 2016

On 14 April, The Confederation of Indian Organisations (CIO) hosted a community celebration for Vaisakhi at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre. Vaisakhi is one of the three principal festivals of the Sikh calendar.

This latest event for Vaisakhi had a wonderful turnout, with the Neighbourhood Centre at full capacity. There was a popular and varied programme of dance, including traditional Vaisakhi and wedding dance medleys, and live music.

The musicians were inundated with requests for new songs and old favourites alike, and the audience got up to dance and kept the party going long after the scheduled close of the event!

A more sombre note was added by a moving multilingual tribute and minute’s silence for Dr. Tara Mukherjee, the founder and President of the CIO, who sadly passed away earlier this year. In 2015, Dr. Mukherjee celebrated the 40 year anniversary of the CIO, and the success of this festival in 2016 shows his continuing legacy.

As part of Leicester Ageing Together, partner organisations including Citizens Advice, WEA, Age UK and Papworth Trust came to showcase the enhanced services which are now on offer in the Leicester’s Belgrave Ward for the over 50s.

Many services are coordinated through the CIO offices at 25 Buller Road - to find out more, please contact Vinod Kotecha or Sunita Parmar on 0116 266 8068.
