Sharing Learning with Loneliness Champion
Katherine Brown, Director of Crafting Relationships, a Leicester Ageing Together (LAT) delivery partner, and Monica Hingorani, LAT Learning Officer based at Vista, met with Neil O’Brien MP for Harborough last Friday. Neil is Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Loneliness. This was a great opportunity to share the challenges and successes from across the LAT programme in supporting more than 6,000 people over 50 to be actively involved in their communities and shape services to address loneliness and social isolation.
Katherine talked about her LAT intergenerational, creative Crafting Relationships projects, for example, supporting children from local primary schools and older people living in sheltered housing to connect through textiles-based activities. She is also connecting communities through Local History Cafes in local museums, stimulating links through arts and heritage.
Monica said, “We shared stories from LAT as one of 14 national Ageing Better programmes funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. Neil was particularly interested in our evidence about what works in engaging older people - particularly those who live alone, who are carers, and those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities - who are most at risk of social isolation."
